My name is Melissa Alba, and I am a 22-year-old entrepreneur. Nearly three years ago, I founded LASHED MIAMI, a venture that has transformed my life in countless ways... The decision to take a lash course was one of the best I have ever made. Allow me to share the story of how my lash business came to be.

In 2019, I was attending Nova Southeastern University with the aim of pursuing a career in dentistry. My primary focus at the time was on my studies and securing employment to finance my education. Lashing was not something I had ever seriously considered until I left my position as a hostess at a restaurant and enrolled myself into a lash course. This seemed like the ideal part-time occupation, allowing me to work from home while still concentrating on my academic goals.

Following the completion of the course, I started offering lash services to friends and family before expanding to clients a month later. Within six months, my calendar was fully booked weeks in advance, thanks to effective social media marketing strategies and recommendations from client to client. Through this I grew a a very steady income and clientele. 

​

As my passion for lashing grew, so did my business. I began to question if I would be able to continue in the lash industry or eventually have to quit in order to keep up with my studies which had become more demanding. 

 

After much deliberation, I chose to take a break from Nova Southeastern University for a year. I wanted to fully commit to my lash business and see what I could make of it. 

​

I am fortunate to have met a fellow lash entrepreneur early on in my journey. Our friendship and businesses flourished simultaneously, providing us with mutual support and motivation during long, arduous workdays. @lashviews has been a constant source of inspiration and friendship in this journey.

In the second year of my business, I started offering lash courses, which became another passion of mine. Teaching others the art of lashing and the possibilities that come from it proved to be fulfilling. During that year, I also made the decision not to return to school. I became committed to growing my business and continue doing lash trainings. 

​

With time the challenges of managing a one-person operation eventually took a toll on me.

I had reached a burnout point where I was physically and mentally destroying my body. This prompted me to prioritize my well-being and strike a healthy work-life balance. It took a lot of trial-and-error to figure out how to balance these two things and essentially, what works for me. 

 

I will briefly share the methods and approaches I took that are proven to be effective for me. Changing my diet was one of the first things I implemented and still practice today. I believe eating the right foods and eating enough of it for your body will optimize your energy levels and overall work performance. Feel good, do good. Right? I then changed the way I was showing up for the day. I believe in prioritizing all the different things that make me feel and look my best. Through this journey Yoga became a passion of mine as well, it has allowed me to get in tune with my body and self, which in return has pushed my drive in all areas of life. 

 

To this day I am still finding and practicing new approaches to live a more balanced life. 

 

As I entered the third year of LASHED MIAMI, I am grateful for the numerous milestones and learning experiences that have shaped my journey thus far.

 

In 2023, I relocated to a new location in Downtown, Miami and I remain deeply appreciative of my clients, whose support has made this all possible. I can confidently say that becoming a lash technician was the best decision I have ever made. There are numerous benefits to launching your own business, including the development of discipline, hard work, and the freedom to control your own schedule and destiny.
